I don't belive you must spend Fri nite at Traders in order to cook the backyard chicken, but the Fri night social hour can be pretty fun out there. Wink

The way to get started is easy..........show up, pay your entry fee, cook.

Springtown has a good cookoff coming up Sept. 18,
Ft Worth Oct 23,
Irving Elks Lodge in Feb.
Just keep an eye on the ibca website.

My wife and I started cooking IBCA last year.  It's like swimming, just jump in and go for it.  You don't need to spend a lot of money.  My number one suggestion is to be well organized by making a list of things you will use at the contest.  Then compartmentalize the items by how they are used, basically grouping cooking items, cooker items, shelter items and so forth together.  Give your self plenty of time at the contest.  Make up a script of times when you light your pits and start cooking.  You will get tired early in the morning.  Don't leave it to chance.  My wife and I plan on cooking at one more contest this year and will try and do 3-5 next year in Louisiana and Texas.  Basically, the number one thing to get from a contest is to have a good time.
